Bamboo sheets marketed as “cooling” are everywhere, and the quality range is enormous. The best bamboo lyocell sheets genuinely wick moisture faster than cotton. The worst are barely better than polyester. Here’s how to navigate the category.
What “Bamboo” Actually Means
Most bamboo sheets are viscose from bamboo (also called bamboo rayon or bamboo lyocell). The bamboo plant is processed into a fiber through a chemical process. The resulting fabric has excellent moisture-wicking properties — but the process matters. OEKO-TEX certification ensures the chemicals used are safe.
True bamboo linen (mechanically processed) is rare and expensive. Most “bamboo” sheets are viscose — which is fine, just understand what you’re buying.

Red Flags When Shopping Bamboo Sheets
- No OEKO-TEX certification: The chemical processing may leave residues
- “100% bamboo” with no further specification: Vague, often lower quality
- Very low prices: Bamboo lyocell is more expensive to produce than polyester; extremely cheap “bamboo” sheets are often mostly synthetic
- Machine wash on high: Quality bamboo sheets require gentle washing; brands recommending otherwise are cutting corners on fabric quality
